严格来说，表达冗余并不属于语法错误，而属于语言有待优化的层面，消除冗余表达的目标是句中没有多余内容。但这一点很难界定，学术界也没有定论，但可以遵循这样一个原则，即在保证原意的前提下，用词越少越好。
例如：This is the only road leading to affluence and prosperity.Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that he make every word tell.
