      通过回顾过去，人们了解问题产生的前因后果，从而才能够找到更好的解决方法；

      人们需要回顾过去的失败经历，总结失败经验，避免犯同样的错误；

      人们也可以从过去的成功案例中汲取经验，解决问题；经典的例子就是这一次我们国家应对疫情，吸取了2003年北京SARS的经验，能够更好的采取相应政策，阻止病毒传播。

      To tackle current and future difficulties, people adopt different approaches, which can be generally divided into two distinct ways, namely drawing lessons from past experiences or exerting creativity to find unique solutions. As far as I am concerned, in retrospect, we find more effective ways to have problems solved.   

      To begin with, there are clues in the past revealing how present problems come into being and hence the solutions. The forming of current situation must be the result of evolving of a series of factors. Without clearly identifying all those relevant factors, it is highly possible that the solutions will either end up with failure or make the situation worse. A.E. Stevenson is right in saying that we can chart our future wisely and clearly only when we know the path which has led to the present. For instance, the history speaks to us that many environment problems, such as depletion of natural resources and global warming, are caused by people’s greed. Neither advancing technologies, most of which are facing the barriers of high costs and deficiency in application, nor signing international treaty and destroying it years later can completely solve the problem, but educating and increasing nations’ and people’s environment protection awareness is the key.   

      Secondly, while reviewing the past, we avoid repeating the same mistakes. Any failure, disaster and loss generated in the past should be given certain consideration when people are under similar circumstances. For any individual, company or nation, the price is too high to pay for the same mistake. For example, while popularizing standard mandarin in China, the government should avoid what happened to dying language Navajo, a Native American language. To achieve success in the United States, Navajo children learn English and gradually lose their native language. So, it is of great importance for Chinese government to figure out a solution that is effective in both spreading the use of mandarin and protecting local dialects.

      Last but not least, we are always rewarded with inspirations from analyzing successful stories in the history. Like failure in the past sounding the alarm, the achievements in history provide people today with lessons to draw on and sometimes even methods to copy. A pretentious person refusing to refer to others’ successful methods in the past and sticking to his own way may end up wasting too much time or even failure. Facing the threat of novel coronavirus, the Chinese government has drawn lessons from SARS in 2003 and timely adopted a series of policies, including city lockdown, requiring citizens to wear masks, etc. It is the government’s quick reaction that helped and saved thousands of lives and prevented the wide spread of the lethal virus.   

      To sum up, to review the past plays an important role in helping people solve current and future problems. It is not only because that people find factors causing the trouble, but also because that people avoid same mistakes and come up with better solutions.
